New Scam Alerts

Unfortunately, scams and fraudulent activity are still on the rise. An important way to protect yourself is to stay informed. We want to make members aware of some of the scams that we have seen recently at the Credit Union.

Fake calls from US Treasury

Members receive a call stating that fraudulent accounts have been opened in their name. They then direct members to “Microsoft” for diagnostic testing of their computers. From there, the fraudsters can gain access to everything on the computer, including personal information and passwords. Similarly, a member received a popup from “Apple” on their computer. “Apple” then connected them to the US Treasury, who advised them to go to a bank branch that they don’t normally use to withdraw $20,000. Luckily, our member sensed the scam and did not give out any personal information or withdraw the money.

Scam phone calls

Fraudsters call posing as Amazon, Google, Federal Trade Commission, PayPal, or other institutions, notifying the member that several new accounts have been opened in their names. They use this as a scare tactic to get you worried that your information is compromised and then encourage you to divulge personal and account information.

Anti-Virus Software

Some members have seen a popup on their computer or received an email that their antivirus software is expiring. They are prompted to click a link and input payment information to extend their protection. Once that information is submitted, the fraudster now has your card information and can use it to make purchases.

Unpaid Tolls

Members receive a text message stating that they have an unpaid toll and if they don’t pay it by clicking on the link then they may face consequences. Once you use the website to pay the toll, the fraudsters now have your payment information and can use it to make purchases with your account.

Please do not disclose any personal information to anyone you don’t know. If you think you might be a victim of a scam, please contact PFCU at (585) 624-7474 or [email protected].
